Once labelled part of the ‘Looney Left’, today, the former Rt Hon Mr Tony Benn MP (Rtd) is today seen as one the world’s greatest champion fighters for the causes he represents. When Mr Benn speaks introducing himself as Mr Tony Benn ‘PENSIONER’ his audiences are silent and cling to each and every word the master Parliamentarian utters, it is a pleasure just to watch his audiences many with different and intriguing expressions, their faces both young and old light up with sincere respect for this ageless and tireless former world war two fighter pilot. Even today the young have great respect for Mr Benn some of them describing him as “ the  man who keeps to his principles” .

Britain’s young may not have a clue who their present member for Parliament is, they certainly have no problems identifying Tony Benn here in Manchester for the New Labour Party Conference.  When I spoke to him last weekend he asked with genuine interest and concern about what was going on within Manchester Mental Health he spoke with more knowledge about the plight of Manchester Users than any Manchester based Councillor or Politician. Mentioning the brave actions of fellow trade unionist and senior Mental Health Nurse Karen Reissmann he said that he was deeply concerned with what had happened to the Manchester Nurse after she had spoken at the request of her patients to the press.  Also giving her support to the patients and a great fighter for the NHS principles and attending the conference was former member of parliament Alice Mahon who recently took legal action to get a drug prescribed which would prevent her loosing the sight in her eyes Ms Mahon, aged 69, was told by her consultant in November that she should get Lucentis – one of a new generation of drugs for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The drug, which costs £12,000 for a year’s treatment, stabilises vision loss and may reverse the damage, but needs to be given quickly because the sight can rapidly deteriorate…

Alice who spoke of her support for Manchester Snr Mental Health Nurse Karen Reissmann spoke out in support of the sacked nurse who will be legally now represented by the Trade Union Council’s own legal teams.
