Edale House Patient ‘Shut Out of Ward and Died’

Edale House

A man died outside a hospital ward after nurses refused to let him in, an inquest has heard

Peter Thompson, 41, was a patient at Manchester Royal Infirmary’s mental health unit but was not allowed in on 3 April 2010 as he had a bottle of vodka.

He refused to give up the vodka so was told to stay by the ward entrance, where he was found dead 10 hours later.

Jurors were shown CCTV footage of staff moving his body away from the ward doors before paramedics arrived.

Members of staff could then be seen mopping the floor where Mr Thompson had been lying.
Police were called to the unit shortly afterwards, the inquest was told.
Checked ‘periodically’
Mr Thompson, of Gorton, had a long history of drink and drug abuse, and had been addicted to crack cocaine and heroin.
In February 2010, his condition deteriorated and he was admitted to Edale House as a voluntary patient.
The unit, which treats about 80 patients, has a policy of not allowing alcohol or drugs onto the ward.
On 3 April 2010, Mr Thompson arrived at Grafton ward with a bottle of vodka. After being told he could not go into the ward with the alcohol he went to sleep in the corridor outside.
Staff checked him periodically, but he was found dead at about 0600 BST.
The inquest, at Manchester Crown Court, continues
