DO NOT FORGET MENTAL ILLNESS Thursday 17 Th June 2014

MEN LogoAnyone who has experienced mental illness or has a loved one who has will know the terrible toll it can take.

Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and other conditions can make even the strongest of us feel unable to cope.

Reaching out for help at one of the darkest times take a huge amount of courage. And the service of Samaritans volunteers can never be underestimated.

But they should not have to deal with calls from people suffering severe and complex mental illness who have nowhere else to turn.

The concerns expressed by the charity that patients in Greater Manchester who are seeking help from health professionals are instead being referred to their volunteer advisors,  are deeply troubling.

It’s extremely worrying that some of the most vulnerable and isolated people in our region are having to rely on a charity phone line in what is sometimes a medically desperate situation.

Just because a mental illness is not as visible as a broken leg does not mean it requires any less resources or lower standards.
