CCGs and local authorities have invested £2.4 million in an online webtool for patients to ‘self manage’ their mental health.
The webtool, expected to launch in the autumn, will be commissioned led by NHS Tower Hamlets CCG, but will be available to patients in all of London. It has been jointly funded by all of the CCGs and the local authorities.
The tool, that will be available on both desktop and mobile platforms will give patients access to online information and support, while being monitored by mental health professionals.
It is designed to cut costs and reduce pressure on other services, CCG leaders said, as a recent report by the Greater London Authority revealed that poor mental health costs London a total of £26bn each year including health and social care to treat illness, benefits to support people living with mental ill health, costs to education services and the criminal justice system, and issues such as reduced productivity and quality of life.
A Canadian doctor has created an app, dubbed as an ‘Instagram for Doctors’, which is helping Manchester medical students with their studies.
The creator of “Figure 1″, Dr. Joshua Landy, is a critical care specialist at the Scarborough Hospital in Toronto. Along with his co-founders Gregory Levey and Richard Penner, his goal was to create a “network where healthcare professionals could share images and create discussions.”
Child MENTAL HEALTH services England must be prioritised more to tackle the complex and severe problems they face, a leaked draft taskforce report says.
The review, headed by senior NHS England and Department of Health officials, said addressing the issue must become a “national ambition”.
It highlights rising waiting times and the lack of age-appropriate hospital services.
But it noted attempts had STARTED being made to improve care.
The taskforce was set up by ministers. In particular, its draft report praised the push by the government on MENTAL HEALTH since 2011, when ministers said they wanted “parity of esteem with physical health services”.

Short-term savings in mental health budgets may lead to long term problems, the charity warns
Local councils trying to provide mental health care are “storing up problems” for the future, a charity has claimed.
Replacing specialist services with generic care to cut costs would result in long-term problems for some, Hafal chief executive Alun Thomas said.
He claimed many people would “end up losing portions of their lives”.
The Welsh Local Government Association said councils were doing their “utmost” to protect services for vulnerable people but faced “massive pressures”.
Greater Manchester Police has collaborated with Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMW ) to provide a training programme for staff that improves the understanding of mental health.
Researchers from The University of Manchester’s National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness investigated whether suicides were related to the way mental health services were organised based on staff and patient surveys, national databases and other records. Their report “Healthy Services and Safer Patients” is based on 13,960 patient suicides from 2004-12.
