Suicide rates for middle-aged men in mental health care up 73%, Man Uni study reveals

More than a thousand men in the care of mental health services are committing suicide every year, a report by The University of Manchester reveals.

Suicides amongst male metal health patients have increased by 29% since 2006 – up to 1,239 a year – according to the report published by the university’s National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness (NCISH) today.

AROUND-the-clock mental health care will be provided at all accident and emergency departments within the next five years.
In the NHS mandate between the Government and NHS England, which sets out the ambitions for the health service, it states that access to crisis services for an individual must be “at all times as accessible, responsive and as high quality as other health emergency services”.
This includes ensuring the provision of adequate liaison psychiatry services in emergency departments.

Manchester Royal Infirmary, Salford Royal, Royal Oldham and Stepping Hill have been unanimously chosen as the four ‘specialist’ hospitals in Greater Manchester as part of the ‘Healthier Together’ hospital reconfiguration.
The four locations were amongst 10 regional hospitals in the running to become ‘super hospitals’.

Other services causing mental health bed shortage – Crisp Commission

Delayed discharges, unsuitable living conditions and inappropriate services are behind excessive bed shortages for mental health patients, an inquiry has found.
The interim report from the Commission on Acute Adult Psychiatric Care found that 92% of consultants in the 122 acute wards surveyed said they treated patients who could have been treated elsewhere if other services had been available.

Andrew Flintoff has revealed that he has given up drinking, as it makes his bouts of depression worse.

The former England all-rounder had a reputation for being a hard drinker and famously attended a Downing Street reception for England’s winning 2005 Ashes team while drunk.

However, Flintoff told BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs that he has given up drinking in a bid to improve his mental health.
