“However, people have to be confident that quality primary care and community services are in place at a time of severe cuts.

“I will make mental health and support for people with learning disabilities a personal priority.

Backing Mr Lewis to become Labour’s mayoral candidate for 2017, he said: “In his campaign Ivan Lewis has shown that he has not lost touch with his roots as a lifelong resident of Greater Manchester, as a local councillor in Bury, and as a worker in the voluntary sector.

“He has set out the strongest vision and policies for a thriving and inclusive Greater Manchester and I will be giving him my first preference vote.

The veteran MP said Mr Lewis has the right experience for the job

But he said his own judgement was that Mr Lewis, the MP for Bury South, has the right experience for the job, with current interim mayor Tony Lloyd ‘the second best’.

Mr Stringer said: “I don’t endorse candidates, but I am happy to tell people which way I am voting.

“I think Labour members should look at the records of all the candidates for themselves. I have looked and that and in my judgement Ivan is the best candidates and Tony is the second best.

“His experience as a minister and in local government gives him the relevant expertise, particularly in integrating health and social care.”

Ivan Lewis was minister for care under the last Labour government and prior to 1997 had been a Bury councillor.

Johnson said he was backing Lewis’s bid to be Labour’s mayoral candidate in Greater Manchester because the MP for Bury South was incredibly talented, imaginative and creative. “It’s a very important part of politics, creativity, and I think in many ways [Lewis] was constrained in his creativity by being a minister,” he said. “I think the kind of role that mayor of Manchester would give him would allow him free rein to use his talents.”

Lewis served as a minister in both Tony Blair’s and Gordon Brown’s Labour governments. He was shadow culture secretary and then shadow Northern Ireland secretary under Ed Miliband’s Labour leadership.
