On the day Carolan was arrested by police last December, Mrs McGivern suffered a fatal heart attack. The grandmother was said to be absolutely mortified that her friend and Mrs Bryan said: ‘My mum couldn’t cope with the fact somebody had done that to her.
‘She loved her and thought she was her best friend. I think this contributed to her death.
She would still be here today without all this. She would easily have more years in her.’
Carolan, who had no previous convictions, admitted fraud and was jailed for six months. Sentencing her, Judge Lever branded Carolan’s behaviour as ‘despicable’.confidante had plundered her life savings.
The Con-Dem government have outsourced the assessment of disabled people for eligibility for benefits to the private IT company Atos Origin in order to shift disabled people onto the much harsher regime of Jobseekers Allowance and distance themselves from responsibility for what happens to disabled people as a result. Their assessments are degrading, stressful and unfair. Many of the people they find “fit to work” simply are not; in 2010, over 1300 people died soon after being kicked off disability benefits due to an Atos assessment. This number is rising.
