DO NOT FORGET MENTAL ILLNESS

MEN LogoAnyone who has experienced mental illness or has a loved one who has will know the terrible toll it can take.

Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and other conditions can make even the strongest of us feel unable to cope.

Reaching out for help at one of the darkest times take a huge amount of courage. And the service of Samaritans volunteers can never be underestimated.

Boys don’t cry, or at least they’re not supposed to. Yes, the old, unreconstructed machismo that was once all too synonymous with being a man has been partly driven back; men are more likely to open up and talk about their feelings. But discussing anxiety, depression and mental distress is still seen as weak or unmanly; the pressure to “man up” and “stop being such a woman” remains pervasive. And let’s be frank: these expectations are killing all too many men.

In November of two thousand and seven, eighty-three [83] cross party MP signed an early day motion sponsored by Manchester MP John Leech, in July of 2007. Let us not forget what was said back then in the House of Commons about Manchester Mental Health & Social Care Trust (MMH&SCT) who had a bad record when it came to free speech.

MANCHESTER PREPARES FOR A CHARTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH PATIENTS

“As a direct result of ‘Patient’ (Services Users) receiving some of the poorest commissioned mental health care in the country , Manchester services user groups have been working with MACC and other mental health support groups on a Manchester Mental Health Charter; which already holds the support of Manchester Services User groups and carer groups and is presently seeking pursuant to further consultation with ‘Services Users’ and the Manchester People and which will eventually give legally binding protections from discrimination because of mental disability and should contractually enlist all members of staff who work for the three Manchester commissioning Groups who commission for Manchester mental health services for patients within their remit.”

Stigma and Benefit Reform

Stigma and Benefit Reform

The study revealed stigma and discrimination to be the biggest barrier to employment identified by people with mental health conditions who had been offered or involved in employment support.

During in depth interviews people described discrimination in all areas of life. Stereotypes linking mental illness with violence are still strongly portrayed in the media.

‘People are scared because of all the things that the media tell them, that we go around stabbing people’. (Sol SUP)

People reported cases of discrimination by employers and employees or stories about this in the media.

‘..They sort of sidle away from you, a lot of people are very unfriendly when they find out you know’. (Chris SUP)

‘I’m scared they will find out. I hear them say ‘he’s psycho’ things like that, I just laugh but it makes me feel uncomfortable’. (Caroline SUP)
